It really is amazing how some videos go viral in what seems to be a blink of an eye. One day they are introduced to the World, the next day they are racking up thousands even millions of views. So what exactly is a viral video? A viral video is a video that becomes popular through internet sharing. This internet sharing includes: video sharing sites, social media sites, and email. Viral videos most commonly contain humorous content. Other popular video content includes: real-life reactions from people who are not aware they are being filmed, historically captivating information, heartwarming stories, and more.

While many viral videos are not produced by companies hoping to attract more customers, some companies have seen great success with viral videos. Companies have begun planning and carefully executing videos they are confident can become viral sensations. The success of a viral video may not be guaranteed, but viral videos are often cheaper and more effective than Television ads. Thanks to the almost 2.5 billion people who use the Internet, companies can more easily reach a larger audience with the use of a viral video, rather than TV ads. Not only does creating the video take extreme creativity and strategy, but the release of the video also needs to be strategically planned if the company wants the video to be a success.

Whether a company created the video or it was the hottest music video of the year, viral videos seem to be creating some major buzz on the Internet these days. Before we get too far into 2013, let’s take a look back on some of 2012’s most viral videos.
