Color Trends

Author: Lori Highby

Do you know what the color of the year is for 2014? If not, think of colors that you’ve seen around you quite a bit over these last few months. Every year PANTONE searches the world to find a color that will influence many industries including fashion, home, industrial design, packaging and graphic design. This year’s color, Radiant Orchid, is a vibrant purple with pink undertones. I’ve seen this color especially take hold in the fashion and beauty industries.

When choosing color palettes for a new website or design there is quite a bit of thought involved. Each color will evoke different feelings and reactions from different people. When interviewing clients at Keystone Click we always make sure to ask what sort of feelings they would like to evoke their brand or website. Our color choices are made based off those feelings in combination with a few other factors.

Look at brands around you and pay attention to how their colors make you feel. Many brands would be completely different with a simple color swap. For example, McDonalds definitely wouldn’t be the same if they traded in their golden arches for green ones. Choosing a color for a brand can be a game changer. I can’t even imagine having the power to choose a color that will influence the WORLD.

Trends in color tend to catch on very quickly. Since PANTONE released their 2015 Home Color Trends color palettes just a few short months ago, I’ve seen a huge shift towards these colors. If you know me, you know how addicted I am to home improvement and DIY shows. I’ve seen all of these palettes used in recent shows, and I’m noticing them popping up around the fashion/beauty industries as well.

Let’s dive in to these 9 upcoming color palettes and find out what’s HOT for 2015.

Style Setting:

The first palette, style setting, is heavily influenced by the fashion industry. It evokes feelings of polish, poise, and finesse. This palette contains 2014’s color of the year, Radiant Orchid, so I expect to see these colors around for quite a while.

Abstractions:

This color palette is influenced by abstract art. These colors may seem random at first, but, when paired together using various shapes and patterns they will paint a beautiful picture.

Botanicum:

This is a great color palette that uses natural hues to create a sense of sophistication.

Zensations:

The calming blues/greens in this palette mixed with the vibrant red and metallics are meant to heighten and engage your senses!

Urban Jungle:

The vibrant blue and yellow in this palette pop against the rustic animal tones and the black and white.

Tinted Medley:

The colors in this palette are closely related warm tones. Together they create a beautiful, light, harmonious group of colors.

Past Traces:

For these colors, think of the comforting feelings you get with the memories of your grandparents’ home. This palette aims for that vintage look while still feeling modern.

Serendipity:

By definition, serendipity means happy accident. That is exactly how one would define this palette. This mix of unlikely colors creates the brightest group of colors on this list.

Spontaneity:

This FUN palette is all about getting you to make those spur-of-the-moment decisions and impulse buys. For me, these colors scream SUMMER.

As you can see, there is a good mix of colors in these upcoming trends. There are also a few colors that seem to be trending amongst the different palettes as well. Next time you are out shopping pay attention to the colors around you. I’m sure you’ll notice some of these colors are already being used quite frequently.
