Introducing Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year: Viva Magenta!
One of the most exciting events of the year for design is the announcement of Pantone’s Color of the Year. For decades, Pantone has been at the leading edge of color science, and the design industry relies on The Pantone Color Institute™ to provide color standards that are the backbone of brand and product development.
The Color of the Year, Viva Magnenta, is a vibrant red that can stand on its own as a signature shade, or as a striking punch of color as an accent. Straddling the boundary between warm and cool, Viva Magenta is universally flattering with a number of coordinating tones.
When it comes to color trends in 2023, vibrant and energetic shades like Viva Magenta and other more subtle shades in “The Magentaverse” will have a ripple effect through fashion, home decor, and consumer goods. If color is symbolic of the times, then the future is looking bright!
Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, described the “why” behind the inspired choice of Viva Magenta for Color of the Year:
“In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.
Rooted in the primordial, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”
Pantone balanced Viva Magenta with more muted shades like Gray Lilac, Pale Dogwood, and Agate Gray to create a sophisticated palette. But you could also go bold using Viva Magenta as a jumping-off point–it all depends on what you want to say! Your visual branding color palette is a very important part of your overall brand design and is a significant part of how your audience will relate to your brand experience.
